Wish We Were Here
Who would have thought that one city at the foot of the Rocky Mountains could produce so many stories of contradiction and beauty? In this documentary series out of Colorado Springs, Noel Black and Jake Brownell introduce us to distinctive characters: we meet an autistic street poet who dreams of becoming a network news anchor; an FBI agent who corresponds with a murderer; four friends, caught in an avalanche. These stories are special for their specificity, their smallness, but of course they are more than the sum of their parts, containing - as, probably, all documentary ought to do - implicit moral questions. It's thoroughly reported, earnestly interested in detail. It takes each of its subjects seriously. We are filled with respect for its intelligence, its generosity, its bigness and its smallness. Recommend, recommend, recommend.
