Us and Them
Perhaps it's not surprising, given the contrarian spirit of its history, but America does seem to be burdened by an above-average level of ideological conflict among its citizens. In Us & Them, produced by the Peabody-winning Trey Kay for WVPB, we are invited to consider subjects on which people hold strong views - atheism, teaching evolution in schools, the war on Christmas - and are introduced to those who have skin in the game. One view or another will likely seem evidently right to you, depending on the world in which you move, but Kay leaves breathing room for every voice, in the process activating those parts of our brains that tend to shut down when someone disagrees with us. Each episode is a valuable exercise in critical thinking, as well as a fascinating cultural portrait.
