The Worst Idea of All Time
It is possible to find transcendence in human suffering, and it is also possible to slowly and horribly lose your mind. In this podcast, Kiwi comics Guy Montgomery and Tim Batt teeter between both outcomes in pursuit of their aim: namely, to watch the same godawful movie every week. First, it was Grown Ups 2. Boasting a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it has been called 'pointless', 'dreadful' and 'not a movie'. After a year, they sought new lows with Sex and the City 2, a film almost universally acknowledged to be a culturally insensitive, thoroughly un-fun, extremely cynical money-making endeavour. They began this second season giddy with high hopes, but soon found their spirits broken as they faced unanswerable questions: Why are these people so awful? How did Brady win the science fair with such a subpar rat-maze? Where is that coffee-drinking extra off to? Why is it all so fucking long? Season 3 tackles Zac Efron's thoroughly panned hipster DJ movie We Are Your Friends.
Thankfully we don't have to hear the movie every week - the podcast is a post-watch recap, and clocks in at around 30 minutes - but Guy and Tim do, and listening to them attempt to squeeze meaning out of the experience is a bizarre and very funny pleasure. For full effect, start from the beginning, and see it out to the bitter, bitter end.
