The Guardian are calling this a 'podcast strand', which is not a phrase we've heard before. From what we can gather, The Story will be a vehicle for in-depth reporting, and some of those reports will be delivered across multiple, related episodes (strands). Its first series is about solitary confinement in US prisons - a practice more rampant than we had imagined, and little regulated - and has been released in support of 6x9, a Guardian virtual reality experience. It's a smart marketing move, but not a cynical one, and makes for immersive listening. The headline piece is a half-hour documentary about the history and effects of solitary confinement, and it's followed by a number of shorter episodes in which inmates give evocative testimony.
