The (Original) Ricky Gervais Podcast
On the occasion of the (sort of) 10-year anniversary of podcasting, we'd like to remind you about a double-act that was really a triple-act. In 2001, Ricky and his writing partner Stephen Merchant landed a weekly radio show with XFM. They were assigned a producer, Karl Pilkington, and soon realised he was something special: a surly Little England idiot 'with a head like a fucking orange'. The essential format of the show was quickly born, and has held across all its iterations: Ricky and Steve riff, Karl interjects or is needled for his opinion, and Ricky and Steve lose their minds. By 2005, they were an independent podcast, and by 2006, it was the most downloaded podcast in history.
The show today is a shadow of its former self, but you can still get your hands on that good old stuff. Each season is available as an audiobook for a modest fee (or might be found, somewhere, free of charge - of your ways and means, we know nothing). We also recommend the best of the original XFM show. The regular hearing of Gervais' cackle is good for the soul, but the real draw is Pilkington, a straight-faced enigma who, 15 years on, still keeps two of the funniest men in the business amused.
