Audio fiction is having a moment, and The Message is fully in and of it. Premise: we are listening to a podcast called Cyphercast, hosted by linguistics enthusiast Nicky Tomalin, who's digressed from the usual format of her show to shadow two hotshot code-breakers at a private cryptography company. As luck would have it, the company in question has just landed a new government gig, and it's kind of a big deal: they are tasked with decoding a mysterious, heretofore classified piece of audio, possibly alien in origin, which has never been translated before. Nicky and her cryptographer idols nerd out pretty hard and some real science comes into play. But there's a creepy, entirely unscientific twist, namely that a lot of people who've listened to the message have ended up dead.
Two episodes are available to date - like any pilot, Episode 1 is somewhat burdened by the need for scene-setting, but Episode 2 finds a confident stride (we'd almost recommend jumping in there). Six more episodes complete the first series, which ended in November 2015.
