The Land of Desire
This sophisticated little podcast is "a one-woman show", in the words of honey-voiced host and history buff Diana, who lists among her qualifications "a year in France (2008, an excellent vintage)" and "access to JSTOR". Her most valuable asset is a deep love for and knowledge of France, and she has put that to good use in The Land of Desire, which brings us colourful stories from the nation's past. And there are plenty of those to draw on, from ballerinas trading sexual favours for financial security to the siege that saw the city eat its own zoo animals. We were impressed by the quality of these engaging, lightly sound-designed audio essays, reminiscent in delivery of You Must Remember This. A charmant 20-minute morsel, bi-weekly.
