In theory, 'the canon’ is a literal, possibly finite list of the best films ever made. In each episode, critics Devin Faraci and Amy Nicholson make a bracing case for or against a film, then commend the question to we, the people, for a public vote: canon, or no? Simple, right? Except, obvs, it's usually not – a film is ‘the best’ in different ways, for different people, and the show is a perfect case in point. Amy worships Rocky Horror; Devin thinks it’s super boring. Devin says Inception is a masterful cinematic puzzle box; Amy says it's silly. They both think Bladerunner is overrated and Saturday Night Fever rules, but the best episodes are the ones where they disagree. Regular battles arbitrarily force the issue, pitting two great films against each other – The Lion King vs Beauty and the Beast was a personal Sophie's choice – with only one permitted entry to the canon. Hand-wringing good fun.
