Scene on Radio
Scene on Radio is interested in the world out there (living scenes, rather than the studio), and aims to capture it in all its vivid, breathing, human glory. Better yet, it's produced by the able hands of the Centre for Documentary Studies at Duke University, so you know it's of the very highest quality. Hosted by the centre's audio director John Biewen, it features the sort of documentaries the CDS has long been producing for public radio, as well as the centre's best student work and features from Biewen's personal archive. Stories cover everything from the community's experience of sports - we experience game day at Busch Stadium, where even the old communal glue of the Cardinals is beginning to come unstuck; we meet two student athletes from two very different families - to a diary of illness and a visit to Hiroshima and a chance encounter in a graveyard. Get these far-ranging, thoughtful and consistently excellent episodes bi-weekly.
