Some context for international readers: gay marriage is not yet legal in Australia, despite long-standing and widespread public support for marriage equality. The current government plans to hold a plebiscite on the issue, which at first blush sounds positive. But the thing is a red herring, a public vote that will cost a bomb, subject the queer community to an insulting and distressing No campaign, and isn't even binding. Into this depressingly fraught territory stroll Rhys Nicholson and Kyran Wheatley. The two have been engaged for years, but they still can't get married, and they're puzzled about that. In this podcast, they try to figure out what the heck is going on with this plebiscite and the campaign for marriage equality, and chat to friends and experts for their perspective. It's a homespun production, but that makes it feel all the more personal, and the banter is funny despite the sky-high stakes; our hosts soon feel like friends. New 15- to 30-minute episodes are out on the reg.
