Writer Jason Fagone has done that mythical thing – made a sustainable living out of freelance writing. In this podcast, he interviews other successful freelancers and the editors to whom they submit, and reveals his own effective methods for pitching, extracting payment, and staying sane. We've been impressed by his guests to date, including a line-up of prestigious editors in Episode 3: Dan Kois at Slate, Bill Wasik at The New York Times Magazine, Theodore Ross at The New Republic. Sometimes Fagone's advice is controversial – allowing only a 48-hour window to hear back on a pitch, for example – but he hashes it out with the experts, extracting specific insight in the process. Though naturally US-centric, this is eminently useful material for writers in all locations and career stages, from baby freelancer to hard-nosed hustler.
