Hello from the Magic Tavern
If you think you don't like radio drama, you probably just haven't heard Hello From The Magic Tavern yet. Allow us to catch you up. A few months ago, Arnie fell through a trans-dimensional portal outside a Burger King in Chicago and ended up in the magical land of Foon. Luckily, he had his podcasting equipment with him and is still getting a faint wi-fi signal from our world, which allows him to record and upload this show. Really, though, he's not the most adventurous sort. He spends most of his time hanging around a tavern called The Vermillion Minotaur with his newfound 'boon companions': the deadpanning Chunt (a talking badger/shape-shifter) and grandiose Usidore (a wizard). Every week, Arnie and his friends sit down for a conversation with a resident of the world of Foon: snooty D'athaniel Quen'yarvin the Elf, who insists on his apostrophes being properly pronounced; creepy, enslaved tavern employee Blemish; sensitive barbarian Krom.
It sounds demented, and it is. But also, it's so funny. The show is largely ad-libbed, so what they're really doing is improvised world-building, one-upping each other with bizarre new revelations about the workings of Foon, and lovingly skewering fantasy tropes along the way. Long-running story threads form up a larger plot - Arnie has left a wife and kid behind on Earth, and doesn't appear to be in a hurry to get back to them; Usidore keeps trying to recruit people on a non-specific quest to defeat The Dark Lord; etc, etc; we won't spoil one bit more.
Episodes run 20 to 30 mins, and listening in order is an absorbing pleasure. Heartily recommended.
