There’s a tonne of new true crime flooding our feeds and we’ve been suckered bythis serial from the Cincinnati Enquirer. It takes as its subject the 1978 murder of college grad Elizabeth Andes. Her boyfriend, Bob Young, quickly became the chief and only suspect in the crime, but was ultimately cleared. This podcast is the work of two experience crime reporters, who have been hunkered down over the cold case for nine months. They express reservations about inserting themselves into the narrative (“It goes against all our instincts,” says one of them, host Amber Hunt) and this modest hesitance, along with their rigorous reporting, convinced us of their sincerity. They’re also right that it would be hard to make Accused without using the first person – this is as much the story of the mistakes they've uncovered in the original investigation as it is a search for Elizabeth’s murderer. Episodes are thoughtfully assembled and produced with the support of local public radio.
