Wilde Stories

Wilde Stories

This mini-series from the Irish national broadcaster will bring us five strange fairy stories written by Oscar Wilde, the world's most liberally quoted raconteur. Published in 1888, these tales are dark and subversive - this first instalment, The Happy Prince, is about a depressed statue who befriends a bird - and in many ways reveal the life of the writer himself, which wasn't exactly all looking at the stars. In this episode, the story is read by actor Robert Sheehan, then explicated by Wilde scholars, who describe the author's experiences of fatherhood, sexuality, religion and other important, mortal things. It's beautifully sound designed and scored, featuring a special composition from young Irish composer Michael Gallen.
