Unsolved: A Murdered Teen, A 40-Year Mystery

An awful lot of podcasts have devoted themselves to the investigation of a single, mysterious crime, for blindingly obvious reasons, but there's some great reporting in this seven-part series from Gina Barton of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. For some time now, Barton has been investigating the murder of a teenage boy: in 1976, after going missing for a week, 14-year-old John Zera was found dead in a local park, in the small town of Franklin. The crime rocked the community, and police questioned more than 1,000 people, but no suspect was ever charged. The difficult, time-consuming labour of both journalistic and criminal investigation is on full display here; Barton tells the story of the original investigation, as well as the ongoing cold case, which in recent years has thrown up new connections and possibilities.
