There Goes The Neighbourhood (Radio Skid Row)
Radio Skid Row is a force to be reckoned with in Australian community radio. Since the station started broadcasting in the 1980s, it has given full-throated voice to those who might otherwise not be heard - migrants, indigenous people, the homeless. But beyond the cultural importance of the work they do, it's just good radio. Take, for instance, this five-part series about gentrification in the inner suburbs of Sydney. There Goes the Neighbourhood (originally titled 'Fuck Yuppies', according to producer Kween G) explores the changing demographics in five different neighbourhoods - the tensions that brew between the new guard and the old, and the longing for something that is disappearing - through the diverse voices of the people who live there.
The tracks seem to have vanished from Soundcloud, but you can listen via the Radio Skid Row website, and it's well worth leaving the safe confines of your podcatcher to do so (or if anyone finds an easier way, tweet at us).
