Hip Hop Saved My Life

Hip Hop Saved My Life

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan is a sharp-witted Brit with a passion for hip hop. In this intermittent podcast, he talks rap music with producer RuMaj and a special guest, asking a series of form questions designed to reveal taste and character, and to start a conversation. There's something deeply pleasurable about the show's mild-mannered Britishness, and this acknowledged incongruity - 'Straight Outta Crawley', Romesh deadpans - makes it feel open and unpretentious, and also makes it funny, because nobody's standing on their ego; we are quickly given to understand that it's fine to laugh about hip hop if you come with love in your heart. And here's the best part: anecdotes are inter-cut with clips from the tracks they're talking about, so when somebody says, 'Remember that song?', we actually get to hear it. It's a slick touch, transforming idle conversation into a nostalgic (and educational) trip.
