Fugitive Waves

Fugitive Waves

In Fugitive Waves, the Peabody-winning Kitchen Sisters of PRX’s Radiotopia are on a mission to lay bare rich, unpolished pieces of audio history, and in doing so weave mesmerising tales of people past. One of our favourites is Episode 11. 'El Lector' would read aloud to the cigar factory workers of Cuba, as they rolled their product with thigh sweat and deft hands. He read from newspapers and novels, such as the epic Don Quijote de la Mancha, with such robust spirit that the women would bang their fists on the work benches in praise. The story is told from accounts both personal and academic, and brought to life with snippets of audio from the time. Other great episodes feature stories from the life of prolific songstress Edith Piaf and brief encounters with Patti Smith.
