Dunkumentaries

Dunkumentaries

We weren't immediately convinced that there'd be five great stories to tell about accurately putting a ball through a hoop, but this short series from ESPN proved us wrong. We were intrigued by its revelations about formative moments in the sport: the first dunk in women's basketball, the evidence of which had been lost for decades; the simple action that sparked the sneaker wars; the racial tensions that ultimately led to the introduction of the three-point rule (this episode also being a collaboration with 99% Invisible). As natives of a country more generally interested in oval ball sports, we also learned some unexpected things about the American way of basketballing, e.g. that there's a professional contest just for doing awesome dunks. It is right and good that such a thing exists and we will treasure this fact for years to come. Each episode runs about 15 minutes, so the lot can be heard in just over an hour.
