Death, Sex and Money

Death, Sex and Money

Aren't we humans perverse? The three things we've learned not to talk about, at least when it comes to ourselves, are the three things we most like to hear about when it comes to other people. Enter this podcast, which shamelessly exploits our interest in anyone else's private life. Host Anna Sale strikes just the right tone – cautious, curious, gentle, frank – in teasing the unsayable out of her subjects, a mix of average Joes (a crooked cop; a reformed playa) and celeb-ish types (podcast ledge and love guru Dan Savage; the Rolling Stones' long-time back-up singer). While there's something extra-fun about hearing a famous person squirm under questioning, the episodes featuring normals are not at all short on frisson. Even in our tell-all times, when Sale asks someone, ‘How are you doing financially?’, we find ourselves holding our breath.

To be clear: this program is not really trying to titillate, even when it does. The point is to make us think and talk about the things that are hard to talk and think about. Listen closely with the ones you love, and prepare for a conversation.
